The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has released partial transcripts of interviews conducted with Internal Revenue Service employees in a Cincinnati branch.
During the investigation, one employee was asked to react to Washington officials who blamed the Cincinnati office for the scandal.
“Well, it’s hard to answer the question because in my mind I still hear people saying we were low‑level employees, so we were lower than dirt, according to people in D.C,” explained one employee. “So, take it for what it is. They were basically throwing us underneath the bus.”
Another employee was asked about whether it was possible if the scandal was only narrow enough to be two “rogue agents” who were singling out conservative and Tea Party groups.
“It’s impossible,” the employee replied. “As an agent we are controlled by many, many people. We have to submit many, many reports. So the chance of two agents being rogue and doing things like that could never happen.”
