Tenn. poll: Santorum and Romney in statistical tie

Rasmussen Reports declared the Tennessee Republican primary “a two-man competition” between Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney after a poll showed the two rivals in a statistical tie.

“The first Rasmussen Reports survey of Likely GOP Primary Voters in Tennessee shows Santorum attracting 34 percent of the vote, while Romney earns 30 percent,” Rassmussen announced yesterday. “Polls from other firms have previously shown Santorum with a large lead in the state.”

Gingrich trailed with 18 points, while Ron Paul brought up the rear with 11 points in the poll. The Rasmussen survey had a four point margin of error.

If the Rasmussen results hold true, Gingrich could be in for an embarrassment given that his home state of Georgia neighbors Tennessee. “Tennessee will dole out 58 delegates on Tuesday,” The Washington Post’s Chris Cilizza notes, “though the complicated allocation rules make it tough for any one candidate to amass a large majority of the state’s delegates.”
