Former presidential hopeful Herman Cain endorsed presidential candidate Newt Gingrich (who defended Cain against media reports of sexual harrassment charges), despite making an unconventional endorsement of the American people before the South Carolina primary.
“I am officially endorsing @NewtGingrich or President of the United States!” Cain tweeted this evening. He also appeared at an event in Florida with Gingrich. “I hereby officially and enthusiastically endorse Newt Gingrich for president of the United States,” Cain told West Palm Beach County Republicans.
Gingrich and Cain, both from Georgia, made no secret of their friendship on the campaign trail. “We’re friends; let’s just lay it on the line,” Gingrich said in November. “I like Herman. I’m proud of Herman’s career. I’m proud of the positive attitude he brings to life.”
Gingrich attacked media coverage of sexual harassment allegations as “disgusting.” The two conducted a sedate “Lincoln-Douglas” debate when allegations of sexual harassment had reached a fever pitch.
Earlier this month, Cain endorsed “we the people” during the Southern Republican Leadership Conference. “It was the people who started this country, and we have allowed the politicians to take it from us,” he said at the time.
