Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., opposed extending unemployment insurance for the long-term unemployed.
“I believe it is fundamentally wrong to give people money for 99 weeks for doing nothing,” Gingrich said. Instead, he suggested that individual states “experiment” with unemployment programs to develop a more effective program than the present unemployment insurance system.
