Former first lady Nancy Reagan complained in this month’s Vanity Fair that President Obama missed an important opportunity when he neglected to invite her to an event rescinding former President Bush’s limits on stem cell research. And at the time, it did seem an odd omission.

Today, Obama got a mulligan — keeping Nancy Reagan’s arm tucked right into his throughout a signing ceremony for the Ronald Reagan Centennial Commission Act.

During the bill signing, the former first lady kept a motherly hand on the president’s shoulder. Noting that he’s a southpaw, she asked, “You’re a lefty?” He responded, “I am a lefty.”

Several past presidents, including Reagan, also were left-handed. Extra credit trivia: So is John McCain.

On the way out the door, more high-level banter overheard by the pool: “Michelle,” Obama said to Mrs. Reagan, “She just thinks the world of you.”

The past and present first ladies will meet for lunch tomorrow.
