MoveOn rewrites Christmas carol: Insurance companies will ‘let us die’

Millions of Americans enjoy caroling during the Christmas season. As it turns out, the people at the left-wing activist group MoveOn.org like caroling, too — just not in the traditional way. On Christmas Eve, MoveOn sent out a video of the MoveOn Council in Minneapolis-St. Paul singing a hearty version of “Jingle Bells, with somewhat different words:

Health care’s out of reach

The cost is way too high

And if we cannot pay

They’ll simply let us die

Insurance sets the rules

And caps the care we seek

The time has come for change, you know

It’s happening this week

Oh!

We can’t wait

We can’t wait

We can’t wait at all

Health care now for everyone

Listen to our call

Rich and poor

Young and old

Black and red and white

A public option for us all

Hear our song tonight!

MoveOn has “councils” in several cities. MoveOn’s leaders describe the councils as “local teams of committed members who go beyond email to organize hard-hitting events in their community.” In the case of this hard-hitting event, the “health care-oling” was introduced by Minnesota Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison — “a progressive champion who is standing strong for real health care reform” — but lest you think it was an entirely Minnesota affair, MoveOn says the lyrics are the work of the local chapter in Jefferson County, Washington.
