Checking in with the former POTUS

Bush near Roswell: It’s out there.  (Daily Record photo)

Former President Bush turned up this week at a ceremony honoring high school seniors in Artesia, N.M., full of stories and thoughts about life after the White House. The Roswell Daily Record was on hand for the musings:

“I no longer feel that great sense of responsibility that I had when I was in the Oval Office,” he said. “And frankly, it’s a liberating feeling.”

By the looks of it, the former president could use a haircut, but he otherwise appears tan and rested. He told the students he’s been walking Barney around the neighborhood, a leafy cul-de-sac in Dallas. And yes, inquiring minds — the former president is a responsible pet owner.

“And there I was, former President of the United States of America, with a plastic bag on my hand,” he recalled. “Life is returning back to normal.”

The local paper noted that: Bush declined to give interviews before or after his speech, and no media video cameras were allowed inside the Bulldog Pit where the ceremony was held. According to Bush’s office, the policy was in keeping with his stated intentions before leaving office of keeping a low profile and giving the spotlight to his successor.
