Spanish-language ad hits Obama in Nevada on social and religious issues

President Obama does not share the values of Nevada Hispanics — as evidenced by his record on abortion, gay marriage, and the contraception mandate — according to a new Spanish-language radio and television ad designed to soften his support among that demographic.

“President Obama has endorsed positions that run counter to the values of Hispanic families,” Alfonso Aguilar, executive director of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, said in a statement on the ad.  “Even among pro-abortion politicians, he is considered radical.  The HHS mandate that punishes businesses and religious organizations and imposes millions in fines is an abomination.  Hispanic voters cannot tolerate this.”

The ad tracks that message closely.“We Latinos are a people of faith and family,” the narrator says in Spanish. “And we are tired of having our votes taken for granted by politicians who don’t share our values.” For instance:

“President Obama has endorsed same-sex marriage.
“He favors unlimited abortion.
“He has even tried to force churches to violate their beliefs.

It’s not going to give Mitt Romney a majority of the Hispanic vote, but Republicans need to chip into the Democratic edge there to succeed. Hispanic voters went a long way towards saving Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., in 2010. CNN exit polls showed Reid winning Hispanics 68-30 in an election in which they accounted for 16 percent of the electorate. He won the whole election 50-45. President Obama carried Nevada in 2008 with 66 percent of the Hispanic vote, compared to John McCain’s 31 percent.
