Pentagon monitoring Egyptian protests

US Defense officials are closely monitoring the situation in Egypt as protesters continue to defy the government’s curfew, setting fire to security vehicles and clashing with police and Army officials on the streets.

More than 1,000 people have been reported injured as night falls in Cairo.

Marine Maj. Chris Perrine, spokesman for the Pentagon said the situation is fluid but the Defense Department has not received any requests to evacuate U.S. Staff in Egypt.

“We are watching the situation very carefully,” Perrine said. “We’ll see how things progress before we can determine how it will impact the defense department.”
