It’s a fight between Hollywood and Silocon valley, painted also as a fight between old media and new media.
Companies like Facebook, Google and Yahoo are fighting against the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), a bill that would allow the Justice Department to shut down any website linking or facilitating online piracy.
Supporters of the controversial act include some of the biggest entertainment producers in the business such as the RIAA, Comcast, and Disney.
Not surprisingly, they have showered the bill co-sponsors with cash in the hopes of pushing through a bill that has internet freedom activists worried.
According to a MapLight analysis of Center for Responsive Politics contribution data, the entertainment industry has donated over $2.5 million dollars to the bill’s cosponsors since the beginning of the 2010 election cycle.
Last week, opponants of the bill, including Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) successfully stalled the bill through the end of 2011, but will likely be reintroduced in the next session.
