The Stevens retirement and what to expect next

Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens is retiring, which means the Senate will be particularly busy in the coming months as it works to pass spending bills, debate a climate and energy bill, ratify a nuclear treaty and now take on the confirmation of a new Supreme Court Justice.

Stevens turns ninety this month and the Obama Administration has been anticipating his retirement. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are now eagerly awaiting Obama’s pick.

“I hope that Senators on both sides of the aisle will make this process a thoughtful and civil discourse,” said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., who heads the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will conduct confirmation hearings. “I expect President Obama to continue his practice of consulting with members on both sides of the aisle as he considers this important nomination.
