Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., caved to the White House on abortion on the promise of an executive order that would prohibit federal funding of abortions, but readily admits that the president could overturn the order at any time. But as he explained, Congress could overturn its own laws at any time, too.
Here’s the video:
Stupak himself must know better. The nine-term congressman claimed that people could go to the courts to ensure the executive order be enforced but this is patently false. And while the Congress can overturn its own laws, it’s far trickier to repeal a law than it is for the president to overturn an executive order.
He claimed he did the right thing to protect the sanctity of life, even offering that it must be right, given opposition to his stand from both pro-life and pro-choice groups. “This must be a good piece of legislation,” he quipped. At least he’s consistently illogical.
