NARAL slams Cain for his pro-life comments

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, criticized Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain in an open letter that amounts to a life preserver for the candidate, whose pro-life credentials have been called into question.

“You are 100 percent opposed to a woman’s right to choose abortion care–even in cases of rape or incest — and have made that position clear on numerous occasions,” Keenan writes, while providing a fact sheet on Cain’s position. “End of story.”

That last phrase echoes Cain’s attempt to clarify his confusing remarks about his position on abortion, by issuing a statement that he is “100 percent pro-life, end of story.”

Keenan disagreed with Cain’s statement that “the president has no such authority to order any such action [on abortion].” She detailed, throughout her letter, the president’s role in the abortion issue, including the power to appoint federal judges and to veto legislation.

“The president could be the deciding factor,” Keenan concluded, on whether what she regards as “outrageous attacks on women’s freedom and privacy become law.”

Cain surely prefers a criticism of his candidacy based on his pro-life statements to the attacks coming from former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa. Santorum released a web video today describing Cain as “pro-choice” and mentioning former Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean saying that Cain has a pro-choice position.
