Kerry: We’d lower the rate of growth, not cut

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., blamed Republicans this for the Supercommittee’s failure, even in the midst of explaining that Democrats will not under any circumstances support real spending cuts.

The problem, Kerry said, is that Americans are undertaxed. “I personally believe that if the Republicans insist on extending the Bush tax cuts [and] making them permanent for the wealthy — we’re all for doing it for 98 percent of Americans — but if they insist on doing it for the wealthy,” Kerry said today on Morning Joe, “it’s very hard to make a deal.”

Initially, Kerry claimed that Democrats “put a $1.3 trillion series of cuts on the table,” but he moderated that statement when pressed for details. “Incidentally, when you say ‘cuts,’ — it was slowing the rate of growth,” Kerry explained. “It was a slowing of the rate at which [spending] is growing.”
