President Obama explained to reporters that he did not intervene in the decision to block sales of the Plan B ‘morning after pill’ to adolescent girls, in a defense of the decision that seemed aimed at calming abortion activists, but he added thate he supports the decision because girls that young might not “use Plan B properly.”
“When it comes to 12 year olds or 13 year olds, the question is, can we have confidence that they would potentially use Plan B properly?” Obama said while defending the position of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. “I think it is important to make sure that we apply some common sense to various rules when it comes to over the counter medicine. She could not be confident that a ten year old or an 11 year old, going to a drug store, should be able — along side bubble gum or batteries — should be able to buy a medication that potentially if not used properly could have an adverse affect.”
Obama agreed with Sebelius’ decision “that there was not enough evidence that this potentially could [not] be used improperly in a way that had adverse health effects on young people.”
