Mum on captured spies, WH blasts Iran

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney refused to comment on reports that CIA operatives have been captured in Iran and Lebanon, but he volunteered strong criticism of Iran almost as a proxy answer to the question about CIA captures.

“I’m not going to comment on intelligence matters from here,” Carney said at the press briefing when asked about the CIA peratives, but he volunteered to comment on “Iranian behavior in general.”

“The Iranian regime is isolated for a reason, because of its constant flouting of its international obligations,” Carney said. “And the efforts that we have undertaken to further isolate Iran, with our international partners, we believe will continue to further pressure the regime and drive it to the conclusion that it needs to get right with the world.”

Carney emphasized the multilateral aspect of the United States response to Iran “Iranian misbehavior is certainly not a new thing or a new problem,” he said, “and we continue to work with our partners to deal with it.”
