A fake Apple infographic is claiming that users of the newly released iOS 8 mobile operating system can charge their iPhones by cooking them in a microwave.
The parody announcement says “Wave” can charge devices wirelessly through the use of “microwave frequencies” and that a new baseband driver makes the feature possible. The hoax even includes a safety disclaimer against “Wave-charging” for over 300 seconds.
Twitter quickly took hold of the prank as users began sharing the flyers under the hashtag #AppleWave and tweeting fake testimonials of how well the revolutionary new feature works.
The hoax, which appears to have originated on Internet message board 4chan, has also produced unconfirmed reports of people who actually tried microwaving their iPhones.
Needless to say, cooking your iPhone like a bag of popcorn isn’t a good idea and definitely won’t charge the battery. If you’re curious what really happens when you microwave an iPhone, see this video.
