Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, the chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee on National Security, doubts that allowing TSA members to unionize will help national security. He has written TSA Administrator John Pistole expressing concern that negotiations on performance management and attendance cannot occur without a “direct impact on the quality airport security.” His letter requests records of all communications between TSA staff and the federal employees’ union.
Chaffetz also notes how previous TSA Administrators refused to allow for unionization due to their belief that it would compromise security and that the “TSA may need union approval to sign off on critical and swift adjustments to airport protocols.”
Pistole is currently barring airports from switching away from TSA agents to private security screening firms, which will help maximize the number of new union members after the coming vote.
