U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton described Iran’s attempt to enrich uranium at a once-secret nuclear facility as a “significant step” towards reaching nuclear weapons capabilities, which she condemned as a breach of United Nations resolutions.
“Such enrichment brings Iran a significant step closer to having the capability to produce weapons-grade highly enriched uranium,” Clinton stated, noting also that “this step once again demonstrates the Iranian regime’s blatant disregard for its responsibilities and that the country’s growing isolation is self-inflicted.”
The Russian government offered a milder response, calling on Iran to aid a “quick start of serious six-way talks on the Iranian nuclear program without any preconditions.”
