Armed woman fights off five attackers

A Detroit woman was alone in her house when she awoke to glass shattering at 2 a.m. as five armed would-be robbers broke through her bedroom window. One shot her in the leg, but she pulled out her own gun and fired back.

The woman, identifying herself as “Ms. Dee,” told WDIV TV, “I was able to get to my gun. They didn’t know I had it. By that time, it was just gunfire.”

She is recovering from a bullet that hit her foot, but is expected to recover. Dee believes she shot one of the would-be robbers before they fled. Being outnumbered five to one in the chaos of gunfire, Dee could have been killed had she not had her gun nearby.

Dee was more prepared this time than she was three years ago, when a break-in prompted her to obtain a gun license. Today, a cancer survivor, Dee said she is now ready for whatever happens.

Her brother Corey told WDIV TV that he was glad she had a gun during the incident.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig emphasized that homeowners have a right to protect themselves “If you are confronted with an immediate threat to your safety, you never have time to dial 911,” Craig said.
