In case you missed it: David Weprin, the Democrat running to replace the disgraced Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-NY, reneged on his commitment to participate in a debate that had been scheduled for Monday. Weprin’s aides explained that he had to reschedule meetings during the debate time which would have taken place over the weekend but for Hurricane Irene.
His Republican opponent, Bob Turner, hit Weprin for “ducking” the debate. Debate organizers agreed, criticizing Weprin even more forcefully.
From the New York Times:
Walther also noted that Weprin did not call her personally to inform her of his decision, adding that “anyone who hides behind their staff, that’s kind of wormy.”
In defense of Weprin, a campaign spokeswoman cited “major logistical and scheduling problems” caused by the hurricane. Turner, who had to evacuate his house because of the storm, sent a member of his campaign to drive the route between the debate site and Weprin’s home – a funny ploy demonstrating that the roads were clear.
As the frontrunner, Weprin has the most to lose from a debate that exposes him to the possibility of gaffes and creates the potential to score points. The candidates met last night in another debate, with more to come. Weprin’s team says the decision to skip the Monday debate “is being blown out of proportion.”
