Boehner, Reid to head back to White House Wednesday night for budget talks

House Majority Leader John Boehner, R.-Oh., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., are heading back to the White House on Wednesday night for more budget talks.

Moments ago, White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer tweeted, “@SpeakerBoehner and @SenatorReid are coming back to the White House at 8:45 PM at the President’s request to discuss the CR.”

The meeting comes as there is growing momentum among House Republicans to pass another short term mesure that would fund the government for another week, and the military for the rest of the year.

Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., gave the idea his approval, declaring, “While I am frustrated that liberals in the Senate continue to resist our efforts to include even modest cuts in this year’s budget, I will support a one-week Continuing Resolution because the troops come first.”

His support is important, because conservative members of the House have become increasingly annoyed with the short-term budget measures that have been passed, and a mass defection from the right would make it harder to pass another one.

Republicans have been moving for a vote on the short-term measure on Thursday, but Obama has come out against the idea, saying the only way he would support a short-term budget is if both sides had agreed to a deal, and needed a few additional days to iron out the details.
