Romney: ‘Hey, I’m for the Tea Party’

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney tried to make nice with the Tea Party on Wednesday without declaring himself a member of the ultra-conservative movement.

“I believe in a lot of what the Tea Party believes in,” he said during the NBC News/Politico Republican debate. “If the Tea Party is for keeping government small, [and] spending down and helping us create jobs, then hey, I’m for the Tea Party.”

Asked whether he would consider himself a member of the movement, Romney chuckled to himself saying, “I don’t think you carry cards in the Tea Party.” No one in the audience laughed.
