Why the rush on a health care program that doesn’t start until 2014? Politics, that’s why.

In line with our editorial of today, New Hampshire Sen. Judd Gregg, R, calls on Congress not to use the Christmas holiday to pass a health care bill that no one has seen yet:

“In the coming days, we will be asked to consider and possibly vote on a brand-new mystery bill, which, again, was negotiated in secret by the Democratic Leadership.  No one has seen this legislation, no one knows what the policies are, and no one knows what the long-term effects will be on the quality and cost of health care in this country…”

His call will fall on deaf ears. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., plans to put the mystery health care bill on the floor late tonight.

But we’re also going to get 20 inches of snow late tonight. So considering the fatuous cries of “murderer” that have been flung at opponents of this bill, one must wonder why we’re putting Senate staffers’ lives at risk just to rush a bill that doesn’t even kick in until 2014.

Could it be that we’re trying to avoid passing a bad bill that voters hate during an election year?
