Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., laid down some air support just now for her attack on Herman Cain’s tax plan overhaul.
During the debate, Bachmann recalled a tax levied to fund the Spanish-American War of 1898 that remains on the books in order to buttress her critique that Cain’s plan would introduce a new sales tax subject to congressional abuse. (Former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., made the same point, saying that he didn’t want to give Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., a new sales tax to raise.)
Bachmann’s campaign then sent out a press release saying that Cain’s much-discussed 9-9-9 tax policy overhaul would “wreck the U.S. economy” by “leaving American taxpayers vulnerable to skyrocketing rates imposed by future Congresses.”
