In light of House Republicans’ unwillingness to “raise taxes on millionaires,” MSNBC host Martin Bashir called for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., to do “the honorable thing” and resign from Congress.
After summarizing the scandals that brought down former Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., and former Rep Chris Lee, R-N.Y., Bashir compared Boehner and Cantor unfavorably to Weiner and Lee, whom he described as the “most noble of all [members of Congress], because they chose to resign when they realized how poorly they’d performed.”
Bashir is right about one thing: Lee did resign immediately when the story of his scandal broke. Weiner, by contrast, lied and extended the scandal for weeks. Weiner’s efforts to hang onto his job led one commentator to express surprise at Weiner’s “powers of endurance” in the face of his own party members calling for him to resign.
“Until [Weiner resigns], he’ll just be another narcissistic politician who couldn’t stop taking photographs of himself,” concluded — who? — MSNBC host Martin Bashir.
