The new state of South Sudan

After voting on succeeding from Sudan in mid-January, initial results indicate people in the South overwhelmingly favored the split. The final results of the vote won’t be known until later in February, but it’s hard to imagine the referendum failing. BBC is reporting that 99% of the people in the South voted for leaving the country.

Several rounds of civil wars have taken place in Sudan resulting in the death of approximately 1.5 million people and a continuing conflict continues in Darfur, located in the western region of Sudan.
