Newfoundland-Labrador Premier Danny Williams needs heart surgery, but he will not be seeking his heart surgery at home, in Canada. Instead, he will come to the United States for his treatment.
CBC News confirmed Monday that Williams, 60, left the province earlier in the day and will have surgery later in the week. The premier’s office provided few details, beyond confirming that he would have heart surgery and saying that it was not necessarily a routine procedure.
Williams, a member of his province’s Progressive Conservative Party, is perhaps best known for his combative style of political independence. He has waged a bitter fight over natural resource revenue against prime ministers from both of the nation’s largest political parties, the federal Liberals and the Conservatives. In 2008, Williams launched the “Anything But Conservative” campaign against Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and successfully prevented the federal Tories from winning any of his province’s ridings.
