Gordon Brown has been reelected by an impressive margin in Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath. He is speaking now; will he say anything about achieving a coalition with the Liberal Democrats? He’s emphasizing his local roots, which are genuine; his father’s church is across the road from the counting station. He says the outcome of the election is not known. And then it comes: “My duty to the country coming out of this election is to provide a strong, stable and principled government” and then he mentions “our commitments to far-reaching reform of our political system.” In other words, he’s willing to do a deal with the Liberal Democrats and to give them some form of proportional representation, presumably to be subject to a referendum—but not necessarily.
