First Lady charges more for DNC than Clooney trip

Donors have to contribute more money to be entered into a raffle to win a trip to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, than they did to win a spot at a fundraiser for President Obama at George Clooney’s house.

First Lady Michelle Obama made the fundraising push for the DNC today. “If you give $5, or whatever you can right now, you will automatically be entered to join us at the Convention in September — airfare, accomodations and tickets to the convention covered for the week,” Mrs. Obama said in an email today.

That’s almost twice what the Obama team charged for the Clooney fundraiser. “For a chance to hang out with President Obama at George Clooney’s house, donate $3 or whatever you can to be automatically entered to win,” Obama’s deputy campaign manager, Juliana Smoot, told supporters in an April message.

Democrats have struggled to fundraise for the convention due to a combination of factors: labor unions holding their cash because the party placed the convention in a right-to-work state, and a ban on corporate or lobbying donors.
