House Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel put conflicting reports to rest by temporarily announcing he will hand over his gavel. The move comes after well-documented ethics allegations, an admonition from the House Ethics Committee, and Rangel’s failure to report income and assets and to pay taxes.
Had he not stepped aside, Democrats would have faced an embarrassing vote on Rangel’s future, to be brought by Republicans.
