Morning Examiner: Obama’s “extraordinarily foreign” course for America

Mitt Romney fired up his conservative base yesterday with a blistering attack on President Obama’s stewardship of the American economy that focused on Obama’s recent statement that, “If you’ve got a business. you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

Romney responded:

The idea to say that Steve Jobs didn’t build Apple, that Henry Ford didn’t build Ford Motor, that Papa John didn’t build Papa John Pizza, that Ray Kroc didn’t build McDonald’s, that Bill Gates didn’t build Microsoft, you go on the list, that Joe and his colleagues didn’t build this enterprise, to say something like that is not just foolishness, it is insulting to every entrepreneur, every innovator in America and it’s wrong.

That “insulting” line proved to be very popular among conservatives later, but perhaps more interesting is the length to which Romney went to portray Obama’s view on the role of government in America as un-American. Romney also said yesterday:

You understand, of course, what’s going on. What he is saying is his justification for raising taxes higher and higher, because government needs more. … You heard that story by the way, he is trying to take work out of welfare requirement. It is changing the nature of America, changing the nature of what the Democrats have fought for, and Republicans have fought for. In the past, people of both parties understood that encouraging achievement, encouraging success, encouraging people to lift themselves as high as they can, encouraging entrepreneurs, celebrating success instead of attacking it and denigrating, makes America strong. That’s the right course for this country. His course is extraordinarily foreign.

Romney is boldly attacking Obama as a foreign influence who is trying to change the course of America. This is not the plodding language of a candidate trying to play it safe. Obama’s attacks on Romney’s tenure at Bain and his offshore accounts appear to have liberated Romney on the trail. The gloves are off.
