Even as the cost of higher education continues to soar across the United States,
colleges
are inventing more unnecessary positions to hire people with woke degrees.
To address
rampant cost inflation
, colleges should eliminate their DEI departments. The top line: These diversity, equity, and inclusion positions are not vital to higher learning. They are a recent invention. Schools were fine before they existed. For example, Providence College, a private Catholic college in Rhode Island, hired its first chief diversity officer
in 2012
. North Central College, a private Methodist college in Illinois, hired its first chief diversity officer
in 2021
. And Meredith College, a private women’s liberal arts college in North Carolina, hired its first DEI coordinator
last year
.
WOKE MEDICAL SCHOOLS ARE A THREAT TO YOUR HEALTH
Plus, these departments are expensive.
The University of Michigan spends more than
$18 million per year
on salary and benefits for its DEI staff. With roughly
62,725 students
enrolled in the University of Michigan system, DEI salary and benefits cost more than $287 per student per school year. Over four years, that’s around $1,150 per student.
Students and parents should ask: Would you rather have DEI staff on campus or shave more than $1,000 off the cost of your degree?
There’s a broader challenge. Along with forcing students to take elective classes that have nothing to do with their majors, athletic departments that lose millions of dollars per year, and ridiculously priced textbooks, plenty of waste that drives up the cost of a degree exists.
Fiscal conservatism paired with a rejection of wokeness offers an alternative to big government control as a solution to this problem.
