Congressional leaders sanctioned by Vladimir Putin celebrate on Twitter

U.S. lawmakers celebrated Thursday on Twitter after the Russian government announced sanctions against nine White House officials and members of Congress.

“If standing up for #democracy & sovereignty in #Ukraine means I’m #SanctionedByPutin, I’ll take it,” Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., tweeted shortly after the announcement from the Russian government.

“Proud to be included on a list of those willing to stand against Putin’s aggression,” House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, also noted on Twitter.

“I’m proud to be sanctioned by Putin – I’ll never cease my efforts & dedication to freedom & independence of #Ukraine, which includes #Crimea,” Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., added.

Also on the list were Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Sens. Mary Landrieu, D-La. and Dan Coats, R-Ind., along with White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer and deputy national security advisers Ben Rhodes and Caroline Atkinson.
