Illinois illustrates how Democrats continue to fail on gun control
JB Pritzker
Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) participates in a debate with Republican gubernatorial challenger state Sen. Darren Bailey at the WGN9 studios on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2022, in Chicago.

The Democratic Party’s gun control agenda follows a reliable pattern. In stage one, politicians who have no idea what they are talking about pass a law that wouldn’t solve anything. In stage two, the law gets struck down by the courts anyway.

Illinois is the latest state to walk down this path. The state passed a bill that
would
“ban the sale and manufacture of certain semi-automatic firearms like AR-15s and AK-47s,” along with certain handguns and long gun magazines, among other things. Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker said that “the people of this state deserve a real assault weapon ban, one that has a real accounting of weapons currently in circulation and a real chance at ceasing the flow of more weapons of war immediately.”

‘SEE YOU IN COURT,’ ILLINOIS SENATE PRESIDENT SAYS AS CHAMBER PASSES GUN BAN

What makes AR-15s and AK-47s functionally different than any other semi-automatic rifle that would not be banned by the legislation? Nothing. Are those guns even functionally different from semi-automatic handguns? Of course not. All semiautomatic guns fire one bullet when the trigger is pulled one time, even if the gun looks scarier to liberals who don’t understand how guns work. Semi-automatic guns are easily the most common and most popular for self-defense. To ban scary guns or guns with certain historical reputations (such as the AK-47, the weapon of the Soviet enemy) doesn’t actually make anyone safer.

And, of course, it also doesn’t make anyone safer because it will probably be struck down in court. The Supreme Court has recently shot down Maryland’s “assault weapons” ban and California and New Jersey’s magazine bans. Illinois managed to pass something that would accomplish nothing and be unceremoniously struck down, just as other Democratic states had done. You almost have to admire the commitment to embarrassment.

The vast majority of Democratic politicians still know nothing about guns except that they want to ban them. They have never wrestled with the fact that even liberal media outlets have
noted
that their proposals would do nothing to prevent the shootings they say they are concerned about. Even when they do accidentally stumble onto a position that would change the game, as President Joe Biden did when he
called
to ban all semi-automatic weapons, they have to walk it back because it would be both unpopular and clearly unconstitutional.

Until Democrats choose to even attempt to understand guns, their gun control proposals will continue to accomplish nothing, even if they are able to withstand the scrutiny of the courts. The Democratic Party’s gun control agenda is grounded in both ignorance and arrogance, and that is why it continues to fail.
