The pressure is growing on President Joe Biden and national Democrats to start taking the border crisis seriously, as even Democratic mayors are growing more irate with the administration’s lack of concern.
At the U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting on Wednesday, several Democratic mayors joined their Republican colleagues in condemning Biden’s handling of the border. New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who recently visited El Paso, Texas,
said
that this is “not a state problem or city problem” and shouldn’t be punted to local governments. “It is a national problem driven by global forces impacting regular people,” Adams said.

While San Diego is not seeing a surge in immigrants the way border towns in Texas and Arizona are, the city’s Democratic mayor, Todd Gloria, also had concerns. Gloria said that the federal immigration system was “buckling” under the surge in immigrants and that it “obviously” requires action, not finger-pointing.
But finger-pointing is all the Biden administration wants to do. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has repeatedly
claimed
that it is Republicans who need to step up and take the border seriously. This is the same line peddled by Jean-Pierre’s predecessor Jen Psaki, who
said
Republicans need to “join us and be part of the solution.” Apparently, it is the GOP’s fault that Biden doesn’t feel like enforcing immigration laws and actively made the border crisis worse by rescinding the “Remain in Mexico” policy.

Of course, blaming Republicans for the border not being secure also contradicts the messaging from other Biden officials that the border is secure. Vice President Kamala Harris, who was named the “border czar” despite not caring about the border,
claimed
in September 2022 that “the border is secure.” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas
said
that the border is secure in both July and November last year.
What Democratic mayors are seeing is what everyone else is seeing. The border is not secure, and it isn’t because of Republicans in Congress. President Joe Biden’s border policy (or, more accurately, his lack of border policy) is responsible, and the only Democrats who don’t want to acknowledge it are those sitting in Washington, D.C.
