Nikki Haley continues her public self-humiliation ritual

It is becoming increasingly difficult to conclude that Nikki Haley’s presidential campaign is anything but a very public ritual of self-humiliation.

On Tuesday, the last remaining also-ran in the Republican presidential primary failed to win a primary in which she was the only declared candidate on the ballot, losing the Nevada primary to “None of these candidates” by more than 30 points.

Now, the Nevada primary is effectively meaningless for the Republican presidential nominating contest. The state’s 26 delegates to the Republican convention in July will be awarded in a caucus on Thursday, in which former president Donald Trump is essentially running unopposed.

Haley, for some unknown reason, opted to have her name on the primary ballot, thereby disqualifying her from being on the ballot for the caucus. It was supposed to deliver her a pyrrhic victory that would not get her any delegates but would generate some good news headlines and fundraising.

Instead, she got blown out in humiliating fashion because voters preferred to vote for no candidate than give her any positive momentum.

Now, Haley had largely written off the Silver State, claiming the contest was effectively rigged for Trump, and has spent almost all of her time on the campaign trail in South Carolina since she finished a distant second to Trump in New Hampshire last month.

But at this point, Haley’s campaign is simply just publicly humiliating herself over and over again, even when she doesn’t intend to, like last night in Nevada or her recent appearance on Saturday Night Live. It certainly makes one wonder if she is continuing this voyage of futility out of some masochistic desire to destroy her public image and any viable political future she may have had.

With just over two weeks to go before the South Carolina primary, Haley is trailing Trump in the polls by nearly 40 points, a result that would likely see her fail to win a single delegate in her home state.

But then again, maybe she likes making a public fool of herself.
