White House has already shot down idea of Trump paying for tours

Donald Trump offered to pay for the White House tours that have been cancelled due to sequestration, but the White House has already said that such private funding is likely not “technically possible.”

“I don’t know if it’s technically possible,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest said on Friday when asked about getting private funding for the tours.  “My guess is that it’s not.  And the reason for that is the sequester mandates across-the-board, non-strategic, indiscriminate cuts to the budget.  It allows very little, if any, flexibility for those who are administering the budget.  And it means agency heads are put in a very difficult position of choosing between two bad options.”

Trump made the suggestion this morning, at Newt Gingrich’s nudge. “I think it’s so nice of Newt to suggest that,” Trump said on Fox, as Politico noted. “I didn’t hear this, but it sounds reasonable to me. Why not?”

Gingrich tweeted that Trump “should offer to pay for the white house tours,” noting that “He can afford it and it would show who cares more for American students.”
