In the wake of yesterday’s Crist-Rubio debate, Morning Joe had the putative Democratic nominee on for a brief interview. “Whichever candidate they vote for, we’ll be prepared for,” said Rep. Kendrick Meek, D-Fla, who noted that he had just submitted 140,000 petition signatures to appear on the ballot.
Meek is widely considered a weak candidate, and he trails badly in most general election polls against either Republican. But with Gov. Crist’s entry into the race on the GOP side, no stronger Democratic contenders were willing to come forward early. Given his early strength, who could have expected Crist to become the underdog for his party’s nomination?
To my knowledge, no one has asked Meek yet about his family earmark factory, which will probably become the issue later this year, after Republicans have settled their ideological feud. Not every Congressman can turn his earmark requests into a free office, car and $40,000 salary for his mother.
