When Mitt Romney appeared publicly to accept the endorsement of Donald Trump in February, I warned that it would come back to haunt him — and lo and behold it has. Trump continues to insist that President Obama was born in Kenya as Romney prepares to hold a fundraiser with him. However, what would appear to be a very clear line of attack on Romney was a bit flubbed by the Obama campaign today with the release of this new video.
In the video, called “Two Republican Nominees,” the Obama campaign contrasts Romney’s embrace of Trump with the way Sen. John McCain called out audience members in town hall meetings who said conspiratorial things about Obama. This struck me as an odd way of handling things on multiple levels. To start, it makes the line of attack a lot more complicated by adding another layer. Why not just focus on the Trump connection rather than confuse matters by bringing McCain into it? Furthermore, while the Obama campaign is okay with saying McCain ran an honorable campaign now, back in 2008 McCain was being attacked for catering to “angry mobs”and exploiting people’s fears — particularly after the selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate. If, four years later, Obama is praising McCain for the type of campaign he ran, it only makes the Trump attack seem like opportunistic phony outrage.

Fortunately for the Obama people, Trump is likely to keep saying stupid things over the next five months, so they’ll get plenty of more cracks at this one.
