According to WCBS in New York, police found a suspected bomb in Times Square. A car was smoking, so police investigated:
As a precaution, the NYPD Bomb Squad was brought to the scene and used a robot to inspect the package. Sources told CBS 2 HD the robot got up close to the package, but that its inspection was inconclusive. Bomb squad personnel then suited up and went in.
Sources said gunpowder, gasoline, propane tanks, and some electrical components were found inside the vehicle.
A portion of Times Square has been shut down during the investigation. Traffic is being diverted from the area and pedestrians have been pushed back from the scene.
The idea of evacuating Times Square seems like a nightmare, but authorities ought to be commended for doing so efficiently. This is a story that could have ended very badly.
