Coalition forces and the Afghan military captured two leaders of the Haqqani network — a group that attacked the U.S. embassy in Kabul last month — and a Taliban agent during joint operations today in eastern Afghanistan.
“The [Haqqani] leader conducted attacks against coalition forces and distributed weapons throughout the area,” the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Joint Command announced earlier today.
In September, the Haqqani network launched a day-long attack on the U.S. embassy in Afghanistan, which an admiral on the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff says was aided by Pakistani intelligence forces.
Coalition forces captured a second Haqqani leader today even further east, in the Khost province of Afghanistan, which is a mountainous area on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. “The leader coordinated attacks against Afghan forces,” ISAF said.
ISAF also reported that “a combined force captured a Taliban facilitator” today in addition to “seiz[ing] weapons and detain[ing] three suspects” during the operation.
