President Obama told a starstruck Jimmy Fallon today that he and Mitt Romney are “not friends,” although the president had warm words for Ann Romney, who has emerged in the campaign as a key to Romney’s outreach to voting women.

“I’ve met him, but we’re not friends,” Obama told Fallon. “His wife is lovely,” he added.

Obama implicitly targeted Romney during his speech at UNC, as he emphasized that he and First Lady Michelle Obama “didn’t come from wealthy families.” Last week, Obama similarly brought Romney’s wealth into the spotlight.

“I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth,” he assured Ohioans.

Fallon picked on the vice president as he joked about his interview, noting that “students, professors, [even] Joe Biden” couldn’t get tickets to watch the interview live today.

After the interview, Fallon tweeted, “The President has left the building. This has been one of the most exciting things I’ve ever done.”
