Santorum endorses Romney

Former presidential candidate Rick Santorum endorsed Mitt Romney in an email to supporters, after meeting Romney what Santorum called a “productive” conversation about policy issues and their past disagreements.

“Above all else, we both agree that President Obama must be defeated,” Santorum wrote. “The task will not be easy. It will require all hands on deck if our nominee is to be victorious. Governor Romney will be that nominee and he has my endorsement and support to win this the most critical election of our lifetime.”

Santorum acknowledged the “differences” that he and Romney debated during the primary, but said he is “comfortable” with Romney’s foreign policy positions and agrees with him on the traditional view of marriage and trusts Romney to oppose abortion.

“And while I had concerns about Governor Romney making a case as a candidate about fighting against Obamacare,” Santorum said, recalling his sharpest attacks on Romney, “I have no doubt if elected he will work with a Republican Congress to repeal it and replace it with a bottom up, patient, not government, driven system.”

Romney did not discuss or ask for Santorum’s endorsement, according to the former senator, but Santorum decided to endorse because “four more years of President Obama is simply not an option.”
