I oppose the death penalty in almost every case. Texas has a very different standard from me. I think that’s bad. I understand most people disagree with me, and very many people probably agree with Texas’s standards. But even if you want the punishment for more crimes to be execution, it seems to me that every execution should be a sad, or somber occasion — and the sum of them ought to be the same.
I think Perry actually handled himself well at this moment. He argued that Texas is exacting in whom it executes — not just hanging people willy-nilly.
Of course, there’s good reason to wonder if this is really true about Texas.
