GOP delegates: Hurricane hitting Louisiana no reason to halt convention

The Romney campaign has taken a careful tone in recent days, mindful that images of Republicans partying while Isaac makes landfall could revive memories of Hurricane Katrina and President Bush’s handling of it, hurting the campaign. But the Republicans in Tampa were not fretting and told the Examiner they saw no reason for further delays of the convention.

“They call them acts of God for a reason,” said Beverly Nuckols of Texas. “It’s not like canceling the convention would change a thing.”

Lisa Nancollas of Pennsylvania agreed. It wouldn’t be any different if it was an  earthquake in California, she said.

Kevin Fulton, also of Texas said he had some concerns but agreed that further cancelations would not affect the storm in anyway. Besides, he said, “They have already portrayed the GOP as anti-minority, anti-black”  so it’s not like holding the convention would change that. (Fulton is himself black.)

Scott Thompson of Pennsylvania just shrugged. “We’ll see what happens,” he said.

Johnny West of North Carolina simply leaned forward, looked this reporter in the eye and said: “We ARE the storm.”
