New York’s new socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, wasted no time backing up his bark with real bite by appointing Cea Weaver to head the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants.
Weaver, a member of Democratic Socialists for America, is a dyed-in-the-wool Marxist and a racist. It is scandalous for her to hold a government office in any state, city, or town in the United States. Her views are antithetical to individual liberty and equal opportunity that underpin American values since the founding.
In 2019, Weaver wrote, “Private property including and kind of ESPECIALLY homeownership is a weapon of white supremacy masquerading as ‘wealth building’ public policy.”
Additionally, in an unearthed video, Weaver said, “I think reality is that for centuries we really treated, um, property as an individualized good and not a collective good and we are transitioning into treating it as a collective good and towards a model of shared equity, will require that we think about it differently, and it will mean, that um, families, especially white families … are going to have a different relationship to property than we currently have.”
Weaver’s advocacy for collectivist authoritarianism makes her not only unfit but also dangerous. In her new job, she will have the capacity to hurt people by undermining the very economic freedoms that have allowed generations of Americans from all backgrounds to build wealth, stability, and prosperity through hard work and personal initiative. Her recommendations will directly affect policy — a terrifying thought.
In 2019, Weaver played a key role in passing the 2019 Housing Stability & Tenant Protection Act. The policy was designed to restrict rent increases and make evictions harder. However, it predictably only hurt low-income renters and worsened the housing crisis by restricting supply and driving up rents in the long term.
Weaver’s newfound power makes her more than just another annoying Gen Z woke radical. She instead appears to be the tip of Mamdani’s Marxist spear.
In his victory speech, Mamdani brazenly vowed to insert heavy-handed government into every nook and cranny of daily life. And in his inaugural address, he promised to govern as an unapologetic socialist. His appointment of Weaver is proof of his seriousness.
