Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, D, a business owner who came to power in 2003 by fighting his city’s nickel-and-dime practices (especially the parking meters) as harmful to business, is probably the best candidate you could cast to vie for control of the governor’s mansion in Colorado. Hickenlooper posted a four-point lead over Republican former Rep. Scott McInnis in February, immediately after incumbent Gov. Bill Ritter, D, bowed out and he jumped in.
But since then, Hickenlooper’s numbers have slipped. In March and April, McInnis led 48 to 42 percent. Today’s Rasmussen poll shows him trailing McInnis by a similar margin, 47 to 41 percent. The result bolsters Democrats’ current fears about Colorado, which our own Michael Barone documented last fall and The New York Times noted more recently.
