Beck: Santorum may be ‘the next George Washington’

Without endorsing former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., popular coservative talk show host Glenn Beck praised the Republican candidate as the most trustworthy in the presidential field, even suggesting that Santorum “is the next George Washington.”

“I don’t endorse candidates,” Beck said today during an interview with Santorum, but “if there is one guy out there that is the next George Washington, the only guy that I could think of is Rick Santorum. I would ask that you would take a look at him,” he added.

“I don’t trust any of them, but if I had to trust the reins of power with one person that is currently in this field and, because I think the next president has got to be Abraham Lincoln,” Beck also said, noting that the next president “has got to be somebody who knows exactly who he is, knows exactly where he stands and is willing to, in the end, turn those reins of power back over.”

Washington famously walked away from the presidency after two terms, thus setting the precedent for a two-term presidency that held until President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to four terms. The two-term limit was established through constitutional amendment after Roosevelt died in office.

Santorum has already set about capitalizing on Beck’s remarks, by making the interview the centerpiece of an online fundraising drive.
