Poll: NH GOP voters support Tea Party in Congress

Suffolk University conducted a poll of likely Republican primary voters that shows Gov. Rick Perry, R-Texas, and Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., struggling in that state even though a strong majority of respondents support the Tea Party.

40 percent of those polled said that the Tea Party has “about [the] right” amount of influence in Washington, D.C., while an additional 24 percent say that the Tea Party has “not enough” power, bringing the total support for the Tea Party to 64 percent. 31 percent of voters polled said that the Tea Party had “too much” influence in the capitol, with 5 percent remaining undecided on the question.

Former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., enjoys a strong 41 percent support in this poll. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, placed second with 14 percent; former Gov. Jon Hunstman, R-Mass., placed third with 10 percent; Gov. Rick Perry, R-Texas, placed fourth with 8 percent support; former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin placed fifth with 6 percent; and Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., placed sixth with 5%.

Bachmann might perform better if Palin, who has not declared a candidacy, were not included in the poll. But the worst news for Bachmann in the state may come in the second choice poll, as 21 percent of voters say that they would move to Romney if their first choice dropped out of the race and 20 percent say they would switch their support to Perry.
